What does it mean to "understand"?

That's the core question of a video from Prof. Lemeshko I've recently watched. He is a theoretical physicist at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) near Vienna, and sometimes brings up pretty interesting topics in his videos that are not necessarily physics related, but rather more about general scientific stuff.

This one was very interesting, because it touches a topic that all of us have encountered throughout life. Whether it's when we read about something, listening to a presentation, or just listening to the teacher/professor giving a talk. We learn new stuff pretty much every day, although at a certain point is already known to us. But do we understand it?

Nowadays, I often encounter this in my job, when I have to explain stuff to colleagues, students, or even strangers. When explaining something, it's not sufficient to just know it, I have to really understand it. And…

Getting into STEM

When getting into STEM, as with most other things, it is important to have some degree of interest for the subject or individual topics. Otherwise it just feels like a hassle.

But in a world that's becoming more and more technological, I think there is also a general benefit of a decent technological education and understanding. We don't need to understand stuff down to the last detail, but it can already be very hepful in everyday life. And with the rise of AI, it's also useful when trying to tell reasonable stuff apart from false claims.

For me, STEM was always present in some form. As a son of two physicists (PhD and laboratory technician) one might expect the love for science comes natural to some degree. But that's really not the case. There was a lot of input from my parents and also a certain level of interest among…

Nice. Having 2 scientists for parents sounds fun. Where I'm from, people are quick to label themselves by saying things like "oh, I'm not a math person". I think anyone can like STEM if they can somehow develop a personal relationship with it. I think having parents who can nurture that curiosity helps with that. You mentioned that science didn't exactly come naturally to you? Did you ever struggle with science or math in school? Could you always ask your parents for help with math or science homework? Did pursuing a career in electronics even feel like a decision to you or did you decide on it early? I messed around with electronics a bit when I was a kid. I liked making LEDs light up and tried (unsuccessfully) assembling really basic circuits from schematics I found online. I didn't really know what I was doing though, and educational resources on sites like youtube weren't as good as they are now. Do you have any tips or beginner project ideas for someone who wants to pick up electronics as a hobby? I think it'd be cool to look at a schematic and understand how each component works (transistors, capacitors, diodes, etc). But it's obviously a super huge field and I can see myself getting overwhelmed really fast.

Scientific evidence of the relationship between nature and body positivity

Hey everyone! Just came across a massive STEM study that fits our community's vibe perfectly, and I wanted to share it here.

Published in Environment International, researchers looked at data from 58 countries to see how spending time outdoors affects how we view ourselves. The results are a fantastic reminder of why the naturist lifestyle makes so much sense scientifically.

Here is the quick breakdown of what they found:

  • Nature is a huge equalizer: No matter who you are or where you live, stepping into green spaces bridges gaps and acts as a universal reset button for our mental health.

  • It cures body anxiety: Being out in the natural world completely shifts our mindset. Instead of stressing over how our bodies look to others (aesthetic judgment), we naturally start appreciating what our bodies can do and feel (functionality).

  • Boosts overall life satisfaction: Letting go of societal beauty standards and connecting with the earth directly…

Science supports our philosophy!

Great to see something like that on a official government website. I really do hope they really try to improve on these situations. Maybe some people from the UK can share some of their experiences.

Here in Germany it heavily depends on the individual cities. Some are packed with green areas, while others tend to lack them mostly.

Welcome to our group Science and Technology, a space to discuss topics related to science or, more broadly speaking, the STEM field. Whether it's a new discovery, some scientific knowledge for everyday life or just anything to nerd about, there is a lot to explore in the world of Science.
